How the once canceled Saddle bag has made a strong comeback in recent years.
John Galliano presented the saddle bag during Dior’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection. Heavily inspired by equestrians, the saddle shape was present in the form of handbags and on skirts.
Due to its unique shape, the saddle bag immediately became a cult favorite, and after appearing on Sex and City quickly gained ‘It' bag statues. Due to its high demand, the saddle was rendered in different styles for several years.
By 2007, 'it' bags like the Saddle became unfashionable. It later on became stigmatised after the scandal with John Galliano in 2011, to the point that even some second-hand shops wouldn't accept Dior by Galliano pieces.
It started to regain popularity in the second-hand market in 2015, and revived by Maria Grazia Chiuri in 2018.
A year later, reinterpreted by Kim Jones for the menswear line, where he also collaborated with Mathew Williams, by adding Alyx’s signature buckle.
