Cristobal Balenciaga Love Affairs

Updated: Sep 1

Cristóbal Balenciaga was extremely religious, and didn’t talk about his sexuality*. Therefore, only two of his love affairs are known to the public.

His first relationship was with Franco-Polish aristocrat Wladzio Jaworowski d'Attainville.

He was a milliner who financially helped Balenciaga set up his couture house in Paris during the civil war in Spain. When d'Attainville died in 1948, Balenciaga was so broken he considered closing the house. It is believed that his use of black was a symbol of mourning.

His second relationship was with Ramon Esparza, who was completely devoted to Balenciaga and his work. He stayed with Balenciaga until he passed away, later working for Coco Chanel.
